Michael Phelps

Michael Phelps is an American swimmer. He was born in 1984. His father has the same name. Therefore the famous swimmer is known as Michael Phelps II to distinguish him from his father. This is pronounced as ‘Michael Phelps the second’. Mr Phelps was born in Baltimore, Maryland. Maryland is a state of the USA.

Phelps is 6’4”. This helps him win because his reach is so long. His feet are like flippers. He swims different strokes competitively such as backstroke, butterfly, breaststroke and medley.

Many Olympic medals have been won by M Phelps.

Michael is the youngest of three children. His parents divorced when he was little.

At school Michael proved to have Attention Hyperactivity Attention Deficit Disorder. This meant he could not concentrate. He fidgeted. He was restless. ALl this energy was used in the pool.

At the age of 15 he qualified for the Sydney Olympics. He did not win anything. He took part in the AThens Olympics, the Beijing Olympics, the London Olympics and the Rio de Janeiro Olympics. In 2016 he was chosen to be the US Flag Bearer at the Parade of Nations.

One of Phelps’ rivals is Ian Thorpe. Thorpe is an Australian swimmer. Thorpe is so fast people called him Thorpedo. Ian Thorpe’s coach had an unusual training method. The coach would get a small crocodile and have its mouth taped shut. The croc would then be put in the pool. The swimmer then had an incentive to swim very fast to get away. The crocodile could not harm the person but the idea was scary.

The most distinguished swimmer of all time is Michael Phelps. He won more medals than 161 countries. That is correct. One man winning more medals than a whole country put together would be astonishing.  But he has won more than 161 countries combined. Some countries have never won an Olympic medal.

The Michael Phelps Foundation donates money to help children swim. It provides free swimming lessons for underprivileged children.

Michael is married and has three children. Since giving up swimming he has reported being depressed since he does not have goals. He has struggled with alcohol problems.
