A proposal for EU immigration into the United Kingdom.

Brexit is happening. The Conservatives, UKIP and the Labour leadership are all of one mind on this subject. Between them the  Tories and the loyal Labour people have a clear majority. The House of Lords can throw obstacles in the way but this will delay things by a year at most.

People have been saying how will the United Kingdom cope without a steady flow of professionals from the European Union into the UK? If all EU immigrants in the United Kingdom suddenly departed that would spell catastrophe. The UK wold be able to survive without so many cleaners or waitresses. If all the doctors and engineers left the UK would be in a pretty pickle.

This is a proposal for what the UK can do to ensure that it has a stream of highly qualified EU migrants. The UK could declare that certain shortage professions will be allowed to come to the UK without a visa and have the immediate right to work. This would be for healthcare professionals, teachers and whatever other occupations the UK deems itself to have a shortage of qualified staff. There would the proviso that these people can only work in that profession. For instance, a nurse from Austria is only permitted to work as a nurse in the UK she is not allowed to become an estate agent without seeking a visa.

Moreover, these professionals would be allowed to bring their spouses and children with them. They would be allowed to stay as long as they liked and retire in the UK. Ideally the EU would respond in kind. A reciprocal agreement might be reached. But even if this is not the case then the UK could do this unilaterally. The EU cannot prevent its people moving overseas.

Should this scheme prove too successful i e with too many people coming in then it could be amended to keep out too many new immigrants.

The UK’s labour problems are multifaceted. There is oversupply in some sectors and under supply in others. The underclass in the UK refuses to work and sees benefits as a career path. One cannot blame EU migrants for taking jobs when they are legally entitled to do so. They put the underclass to shame. Someone who speaks little English and still lands a job in the UK has achieved a lot. Other immigrants who speak fluent English but have no family or friends in the UK and still secure a job are also accomplishing something impressive. Immigrants usually have less knowledge OF THe UK than Britishers. It is impressive that such people manage to get jobs despite being at a disadvantage.
