Groener v Minister for Education

Standard

1989

free movement of workrrs in the EU

Anita Groener was a Dutchwoman. She was refused a job in a Dublin collee because she diid not speak Irish

she said this was unfair

the ECJ said the language requirement was justified.

a country is entitled to protect its national langauge even if that is not the language acutlaly spoken by most of the people most of the time

this rle about knowing Irish to work in a vocational college was long syanding. it weas pursiant to a legitimate aime. the policy was not overly onerous;

the national rules allowed for the poissibility of an exemption where no candiate spekaing Irish could be found.

About Calers

Born Belfast 1971. I read history at Edinburgh. I did a Master's at UCL. I have semi-libertarian right wing opinions. I am married with a daughter and a son. I am allergic to cats. I am the falling hope of the not so stern and somewhat bending Tories. I am a legal beagle rather than and eagle. Big up the Commonwealth of Nations.
