Yukos shareholders v Russia


This is a PCA case.

The Russian Governemtn initiated proceedings against this company for tax evasion.

Shareholders claimed this was done in an unfair way. They demanded $ 100 Bn in damages

PCA awarded the claimants $50 Bn

The European Court of Huma n Rights also found for the claimants but awarded a much smaller sum

There has been a case in the United Kingdom related to ths. Some of the investors were part of RosInvestCo UK Ltd

The Arbitration Institute of the Stockholm Chamber of commerce heard the case. It was found that the Russian State had wrongfull expropriated property in a bid to destroy Yukos.

The shareholders were awarded $3.5 Bn

A Swedish court upheld an appeal by Russia. The respondents said that the Stockholm Chamber of Commerce’s Arbitration Institute had no authority to hear the case
