This is part of Russia. It is in the North Caucasus and has only 73 000 people.
There is a Cherkess language. These people are an indigenous ethnic minority in Russia. They are mostly Sunni Muslims but a few are Christians. Many of the people residing in Cherkess are ethnic Russians.
These people were sometimes called Circassians in English.
The Cherkess people settled in this area from 1780 onwards.
A Karachay-Cherkess Autonomous Region (Oblast) was founded in 1922. The Karachay people were deported in 1943 on the orders of Stalin. Marshall Stalin feared that some of them might help the German Army. Year later the Karachay people were rehabilitated.
There is a Karachya Cherkessia Republic since 1991.
